ELMHURST—Announcing that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve District 2 residents on the DuPage County Board, Board Member Jeff Redick told supporters on Monday that he would not be seeking re-election in 2012.
“When I ran for office, I did so with specific goals in mind that I believed would improve county government,” said Redick. “I have accomplished what I set out to do. Furthermore, I never intended to make serving on the board a career, and I am proud that in just five short years, I am leaving the county in a better position than when I started.”
Redick burst on the political scene in 2006 as a first-time candidate running against a politically entrenched, twenty year incumbent. With little-to-no-name recognition, he conducted a high- energy campaign dedicated to the issue of reforming county government, and making it more responsible with taxpayer’s money. His message, and his enthusiasm, fueled his victory, which shocked political pundits and set a signal that a new generation of leadership would be serving the residents of DuPage County.
“I was overwhelmed by the amount of support my campaign received from people that had never before participated in a political campaign, let alone paid attention to issues facing the county board” said Redick. “However, I believe my message of transparent and ethical government resonated with the good people of District 2, and that is why I won, and why I would have won again in 2012 had I chose to run.”
During his tenure, Redick developed ground breaking budget policy changes that resulted in stronger long-term financial stability for the county. In fulfilling his campaign pledge to make county government more open and transparent, he drafted tough new ethics reforms that were lauded as the “benchmark for ethics reform in Illinois.” Redick has also been credited with the development and implementation of an aggressive and comprehensive transparency plan that made DuPage County the most open and transparent county government in the country. His policy initiatives received rave reviews from government watchdog groups like the Sunshine Review, Americans For Prosperity, Taxpayers United, the Citizens Advocacy Center and the Civic Federation.
“Public service is a privilege that has been bestowed upon me by the people I serve. Each and every day I have worked hard to earn and maintain the confidence and trust that they have placed in me,” stated Redick.
Known for injecting humor into contentious debates, Redick fittingly punctuated his announcement by mocking President Johnson’s famous 1968 speech: “I shall not seek and will not accept the nomination of my party for another term.”
“Jeff Redick has been a great advocate for the people of District 2,” said state senator Ron Sandack. “His energy, intelligence and common sense vision will be missed.”
